Escape to the mysterious world of The Indefatigable Sphinx.

This surreal wearable artwork was designed by Artist Edward Carvalho-Monaghan.

To find the hour, you’ll need to look to the gold frame, but you’ll notice more than just the hour number changes…

Every hour the winged sphinx gets a new head and simultaneously the all seeing eye looks in a different direction.

The minute and seconds hands work in the conventional way and subtle angles within the artwork act as markers for reading the position of these hands.

Each watch is powered by a Swiss made Sellita SW200 movement, with a jump hour module that was designed by Johannes Jahnke for Christopher Ward.

This watch is limited to just 25 pieces worldwide, available exclusively from us. Choose your favourite number from the dropdown menu above.

Edward talks through the design:

“A Sphinx, the master of riddles, inhabits an infinite plane where minerals calcify around arrows and the lacerated landscape drifts in place.

Every hour the Sphinx changes into a different form:

One hour she has a beautiful face, the next it transforms into a skull, not long afterward we see a bowl of fruit where the face once was.

We await a question and wonder how much time has passed in her realm, then start to ponder - are bowls of fruit even capable of asking us questions?

Are such things possible in this place?”

The Indefatigable Sphinx was a real labour of love to produce, each watch representing many hours of work over the last two years, technically it is the most complicated piece we’ve ever printed and assembled.

The individual colours in the design were printed one by one, and the dial has an additional level of complexity as some of the elements of the design are printed onto tiny metal pieces that were then fixed in position on the dial.

The watches were then assembled and tested by our small team in our London workshop.

Edward Carvalho-Monaghan portrait

Edward Carvalho-Monaghan is an English artist residing in Slough in the UK (though if you were to ask his Sister, she’d say Windsor).

Edward explored the psychedelic and underground artwork of the 60’s and movements like De Stijl, amongst other things at St Martins College.

Upon leaving he developed a distinctive drawing style, melding the vivid influences drawn from his studies: a youthful obsession with surrealism and a growing interest in the Classical World and ancient cultures. These influences barge and spatter together in his designs, in a form he would currently describe as Plastic Gothic.
